NightPaw thought life was great, he took certain things for granted, like the love of his mate, TawnyClaw. He loved her more than life itself and tried his best to make her happy, he gave her all he had to give, but she needed more than he could give. Despite all his fighting TawnyClaw left NightPaw. A thing unheard of in the clan. She said that she didn’t love him and that she liked another cat. Upon hearing this NightPaw’s world came crashing down. There was no more happiness, only a yearning for Tawny’s embrace, the feel of her fur upon his. Her barely ate anymore, no longer shared tongues with his friends, and just went through the motions with his daily tasks. Many times, with the help of others who cared for NightPaw, did he try and pick up the pieces of his broken heart, but alas there were too many pieces. He had loved Tawny more than life itself, and without her he saw no point in continuing on.
Finally TawnyClaw took notice and tried to make NightPaw want to live again, but she would not give him the one thing he needed, her. NightPaw always forced a smile when Tawny padded by, but it quickly faded after she left, he always ate when she was watching, but when she wasn’t he didn’t touch his food. NightPaw knew he was slowly dying, but he no longer cared, without TawnyClaw’s brilliance in his world, everything had become dull, as if his entire world was a shade of grey. One day after hearing about TawnyClaw rubbing noses with another tom, NightPaw could no longer take it, he decided to end his pain, his suffering. He went immediately to snake rocks and waited for an adder to bite him. He no longer feared death, for he had already gone through hell and nothing bothered him anymore.
Finally, as the sun was setting the adder struck, NightPaw didn’t see it coming, but he felt its fangs pierce his neck. He felt a numbness begin to spread all over his body and embraced it. Finally it was over, he welcomed the oblivion that the numbness promised. He felt himself falling, and felt no fear or pain, he felt nothing anymore.
When he work up the first thing he noticed was the fierce pain in his neck. Am I dead? he wondered. Then he saw familiar faces above him, those of his father and mother as well as the clan medicine cat. It was then he knew he wasn’t dead. Inwardly he cursed himself for pulling through. Why couldn’t he have been weaker? Why didn’t he succumb to the adder’s venom? Why did his body fight on when his heart and mind had given up? He groaned and passed out again.
He awoke to the sounds of his clan mates crying. Have I finally died? Thought NightPaw, but then he realized that no, he was still alive, the pain remained. He sighed and willed himself to die. Grudgingly he allowed the medicine cat to heal him and to get better. When he was finally released from the medicine cat’s den he was greeted by a crying TawnyClaw. She threw herself at him and told him how much she loved him and how she had never cared for the other cat. NightPaw thought that maybe Tawny had finally realized how much he cared for her, and that she felt the same way. For awhile he felt like his old self, like everything was right and as it should be. Alas, it was not to last.
His happiness was short-lived. Before long, TawnyClaw had began to drift away. The I love you’s from her trickled down to almost none, she refused to touch noses with him, and he always took backseat to her other friend toms. It seemed to NightPaw that she did care for him, but not in the same way. He was desperate to stop Tawny from drifting away completely. He did everything she asked and more, he did her tasks, went hunting specially for her favorite thrush, brought her pretty flowers that he found in the forest that made him think of her, once again NightPaw gave everything, but this time he gave more, and still he asked only one thing in return; for TawnyClaw to be his.
Even with everything he did it was still not enough, TawnyClaw needed more, needed someone new. NightPaw had tried his hardest and, for the second time, he had failed. He excelled in everything he did, but he had failed in the only thing that mattered to him. NightPaw sank into a deep depression once again. With every day that passed he fell in love with Tawny again, and by the end of the day his heart broke again. The cycle continues to this day, with NightPaw falling in love with her the moment he sees her, and having his heart broken when she reminds him that she is no longer his. Now he just goes through the motions, TawnyClaw’s happiness his number one priority, sometimes to the exclusion of all else. He just cant move on, TawnyClaw is NightPaw’s special someone, his someone just for him.
